Performance Vision Clinic in and Kentucky
Our skilled optometrists, Dr. Josiah Young and Dr. Kristin Gunn, are thrilled to bring their passion for sports vision to our community. Both Dr. Young and Dr. Gunn know firsthand the importance of peak visual performance on the field, thanks to their own experiences in competitive athletics.
Dr. Young, a former four-year varsity baseball player at Earlham College, took his dedication to vision a step further. He earned his doctorate and a Master’s degree simultaneously, all while studying how athletes use their eyes at The Ohio State University College of Optometry.
Dr. Gunn brings her competitive spirit from her days playing volleyball at Milford High School, and she continues to spike it on the court today! After joining Opticare Vision Center, Dr. Gunn even took her skills to the sidelines, serving as a doctor for UC Football.
What is Performance Vision Training?
In athletics and certain professions, we use our eyes in intense situations that require highly coordinated eye movements and focus. Optimal performance requires optimal vision. Not only do we need to see well, but we must also ensure our visual system is functioning at its highest level.
How Do We Improve Visual Performance?
We start with ten visual and sensorimotor tests to analyze the visual system. We use a national database to compare the results to other athletes in the same age, sport, and even position (from youth to professional to recreational and retired athletes). We then tailor a plan based on the athlete’s training needs to improve performance.
The performance enhancement plan may include computer-based home vision training, in-office doctor-directed training on the Senaptec Sensory Station, and real space vision training with sport-specific exercises using strobe goggles or other devices.
Training Devices for Sports Vision Training
The Senaptec Strobe is a device that improves the neural connections between the eyes and the brain. This is done by removing visual information (like strobe lights) for the athlete while training. This forces the athlete to process visual information quicker and more efficiently, thus improving reaction time.
